(Fort McMurray, AB, October 10, 2017) - The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to announce a free new activity for local seniors is coming to MacDonald Island Park thanks to a partnership with local organizations and a grant from the federal government.
The RRC, along with Alberta Health Services, St. Aidan’s Society and the Alzheimer’s Society, is delighted to welcome carpet bowling, a popular activity for senior citizens, to the Suncor Community Leisure Centre this fall.
Carpet bowling is an interactive and fun leisure activity designed to engage senior citizens and encourage active participation and social interaction. Played on a special carpet with “bowls” specifically designed for the activity, the sport presents an opportunity for friendly competition and fun.
“We are delighted to welcome this new activity to MacDonald Island Park this fall,” said Rachel Orser, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “At the RRC we believe in life-long participation in sport, recreation and leisure activities, and this new option for seniors joins our very successful ‘Walk on the Island’ program as something seniors can enjoy in our community. We would like to thank our partners for their assistance in designing and delivering this program, and we look forward to welcoming local seniors to the facility for carpet bowling!”
Carpet bowling is a free, drop in program available to all individuals aged 55+. Carpet bowling will be available beginning on Monday, October 16 from 2:30pm-3:30pm at the Nexen Energy Field House at MacDonald Island Park, and will run on most Mondays (except statutory holidays and special event days) at the same time and location. No registration is required to participate. Seniors needing transportation in order to access this program are encouraged to contact: St. Aidan’s Society at [email protected] or 780-743-4370 ext. 1.
