RRC and Scotiabank celebrate success of 2016 Scotiabank MI Summer Camps

Representatives of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and Scotiabank celebrated the success of the 2016 Scotiabank MI Summer Camps on Wednesday, November 9.

This summer, over 1,200 children in Fort McMurray and Anzac experienced summer camp for free thanks to the partnership with Scotiabank. The Scotiabank MI Summer Camps, held at MacDonald Island Park and the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by Nexen Energy, were filled with fun, friendship and new experiences for children ages 12 and under in the Wood Buffalo region.

2016 Remembrance Day ceremony to honour veterans and first responders

MacDonald Island Park is honoured to serve as the host venue for the annual Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 165 Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 11.

The ceremony will take place at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and will include representatives from the Wood Buffalo detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Fort McMurray Fire Fighters Local 2494, RMWB Emergency Services, the Fort McMurray Army Cadet Corps 2803, and 868 Rotary Northstar Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, among other community groups.

Overwhelming community response to “Christmas for Fort McMurray”

Due to overwhelming community response to the “Christmas for Fort McMurray” initiative, the distribution centre located at Shell Place is now closed as all donated items have been distributed to Fort McMurray families in need.

“Christmas for Fort McMurray” was created by Helga and Terry Lempriere of High River, Alberta. Inspired by their own experience after the floods in High River and the subsequent donation they received of Christmas décor, the Lemprieres organized an effort to collect donations of new Christmas décor to be delivered and distributed in Fort McMurray.

Christmas arrives early in Wood Buffalo at “Christmas for Fort McMurray”

The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to announce Shell Place at MacDonald Island Park will act as the distribution centre for the “Christmas for Fort McMurray” initiative, which was developed to deliver donated Christmas décor to residents of the region most impacted by the wildfire in May.

New Artist in the Studio program to connect local artists and students

The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is delighted to announce an exciting new program called “Artist in the Studio” is coming soon to MacDonald Island Park thanks to a generous donation from RBC.

“We are so grateful to RBC for this kind donation and their support of this new program,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the RRC. “The Artist in the Studio program will allow local youth to connect with artist mentors to explore their creativity while also developing new skills and relationships.”

Oktoberfest presented by Don Scott McMurray Law Office a sold out success

Oktoberfest, which is marked around the world as a celebration of Bavarian culture, made its inaugural appearance at MacDonald Island Park on Friday, September 30. The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) was proud to host Oktoberfest presented by Don Scott McMurray Law Office, an event featuring German food, live music, and a variety of beer offerings.
