Another ten years of partnership between Canadian Natural and the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo
(Fort McMurray, AB – February 8, 2023) - The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) is pleased to announce the renewal of Canadian Natural’s partnership with the RRC. The renewal consists of a new ten-year commitment through the naming rights of Canadian Natural Arena 1 and Canadian Natural Arena 2.
“Canadian Natural is excited to extend our partnership with the RRC for another 10 years,” said Adele Thomson, Manager, surface land, Indigenous & Stakeholder Relations. “Working together with the communities near our operations to create shared value is a key part of our commitment to ‘doing it right’. We’re proud to play a role in supporting the RRC as it helps provide a variety of recreational opportunities for youth and families in Wood Buffalo.”
The NHL-sized Canadian Natural Arena 1 and Canadian Natural Arena 2 are some of the most active amenities located at MacDonald Island Park, hosting local ice sport and recreation activities with tens of thousands of participants and enthusiasts annually, including hockey, ringette, figure skating, and leisure skating. In addition, both arenas have hosted events such as Midget Hockey Provincials, the Grand Slam of Curling, the Canadian Ringette Championships, and dozens of local tournaments and events.
“Canadian Natural has been a long-term committed partner for the RRC, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing support,” said Graig Walsh, RRC CEO. “Together, we create community, and with this partnership Canadian Natural is contributing to quality of life and creating community in a region that embraces ice sports and recreation.”
Five percent (5%) of all eligible Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo facility partnerships are re-invested in the WB Kids Program to ensure every kid can afford to have fun. The program provides financial assistance to support Wood Buffalo youth and families that face barriers to participation in sport, recreation, social and cultural programs and activities.
