RRC to Host Family-Friendly Movie Night and Syncrude Grand Finale Fireworks for 2021 Canada Day

(Fort McMurray, June 15, 2021) – On June 30 and July 1, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) will host a free, family-friendly movie night at the MacDonald Island Park (MIP) parking lot, starting each evening with a pre-show of local content from the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA). The pre-show will be followed by a feature film, and each evening will conclude with the annual Syncrude Grand Finale Fireworks.

“Raya and the Last Dragon” is the feature film on both nights. The event will be presented in a drive-in format similar to Canada Day 2020. Families will have the opportunity to submit an entry online into a randomly drawn lottery from June 23 - June 27 for a chance to attend one of the movie nights. There will be limited capacities for each evening.

“In 2020 we saw a tremendously positive response to our family movie nights for Canada Day,” says Alexis Tallon, Manager of Events at the RRC. “This year as we begin to see restrictions ease and the potential transition to more traditional style events, we are bringing this format back for another year to ensure families can once again safely enjoy Canada Day.”

The annual Syncrude Grand Finale Fireworks will be launched on both June 30 and July 1 to coincide with the family movie nights. While access to the movie night will be limited to those holding tickets, the fireworks will be visible from different points throughout the community. Community members are reminded to adhere to any provincial restrictions that may be in place on June 30 and July 1.  The Syncrude Grand Finale Fireworks will also be live streamed to the MacDonald Island Park Facebook page and YouTube channel.

The entertainment each evening is scheduled to begin at 10:00 p.m., followed by the Syncrude Grand Finale Fireworks at midnight. You can find more information on Canada Day 2021 at MacDonald Island Park at www.macdonaldisland.ca/canada-day

The RRC wishes to thank the following community partners for their support in making this event possible: Syncrude, MIX 103.7 FM & 100.5 CRUZ FM and Country 93.3 & 97.9 ROCK.

2021 Canada Day in Wood Buffalo is presented through a collaboration between the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the RRC, the MCA and the Fort McMurray Heritage Society.
