MacDonald Island Park and Suncor Energy celebrate 10 more years of fun

(Fort McMurray, October 21, 2019) - On Saturday, October 19, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and Suncor Energy celebrated community at the 2019 Community Play Day on the Island. Thousands of residents joined in the recreational fun for a day of complimentary access to MacDonald Island Park and additional free activities.

The event recognized Suncor Energy’s renewal of the Suncor Community Leisure Centre that was announced in partnership with the RRC in June 2019.

“Suncor is proud to partner with the RRC and in particular this facility which has become one of our region’s most popular and versatile hubs for sport, leisure, fitness, events and entertainment,” says Shelley Powell, Suncor’s Senior Vice President, Base Plant. “We hope residents enjoyed Community Play Day, whether it was their first visit or they’ve been long-time members. It’s exciting to think of all the memories that will be made here over the next 10-years.”

The day also marked the announcement of the Wood Buffalo (WB) Kids All-Stars Program, an extension of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo’s long standing WB Kids Program which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019. This demand driven new initiative provides financial assistance to kids in elite programming who are seeking support to continue developing their skills. The RRC has partnered with the Suncor Energy Foundation to make this new funding stream possible.

“Community Play Day and the announcement of the WB Kids All-Stars Program are prime examples of the impact that Suncor Energy has on the community and the commitment that they have to the quality of life within the region,” says Graig Walsh, RRC CEO. “For the past 10-years, their support has enabled residents and guests to gather, play and connect at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre and we are excited for another 10-years of partnership.”

About the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo:

The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) was created by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) Council in October 2012 to design, build, steward and operate several state-of-the-art community recreation, sport and event facilities and venues. The RRCWB was officially incorporated under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act on June 10, 2013.

Working in collaboration with the RMWB and with the communities it serves, the RRC builds upon the success of MacDonald Island Park, Canada’s largest community recreation, leisure and social centre, to lead and foster an approach of excellence in service delivery and facilities throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Alongside MacDonald Island, which includes the Suncor Community Leisure Centre, the Miskanaw Golf Club and Shell Place, the Anzac Recreation Centre presented by CNOOC and the Conklin Multiplex, these facilities form the foundation for community recreation, sport and events in the Wood Buffalo region.

About the Wood Buffalo Kids Program:

The Wood Buffalo Kids program was established in 2009 to provide assistance to Wood Buffalo youth and families that face financial barriers to participation in sport, recreation, social and cultural programs and activities.

Five percent (5%) of all eligible Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo facility partnerships are re-invested in this program to ensure every kid can afford to have fun.
